Rooftop Tent Annex: Add a Room Under Your Loft

Table of Contents

A rooftop tent annex is the fabric room that zips onto the ladder side of your tent and walls in the ground underneath. You sleep upstairs and gain a downstairs. On a wet week that second space is the difference between a trip you enjoy and a trip you endure.

What a rooftop tent annex actually gives you

The honest answer is floor area you already own but cannot currently use. A typical annex adds roughly 2 by 1.4 metres of standing space, tall enough for most adults to change clothes without kneeling in gravel. Campers use it for muddy boots, a chemical toilet, a dog bed, wet jackets, or a place to park two chairs when the rain sets in. It does not add sleeping capacity in any meaningful way. The floor sits on whatever the ground gives you, so treat it as a mudroom rather than a bedroom.

Annex vs awning: two different jobs

People mix these up constantly, and the mix-up leads to buying the wrong thing. An awning is a roof on poles that shades the side of the vehicle. An annex has walls, a door, usually a zip-in floor, and it hangs off the tent body itself. Shade at midday calls for an awning. Privacy and dry storage call for an annex. Plenty of rigs carry both, and the two often share the same rail track, which is worth checking before you spend anything.

Check the fit before you buy a rooftop tent annex

An annex only works if three things line up: the attachment method, the tent footprint, and your ride height. Most annexes attach with a zip along the tent’s base perimeter or with a keder rail, and those two systems do not swap. Measure your tent’s open footprint, then measure from the tent base down to the ground at your usual pitch. A lifted truck can leave a 30 centimetre gap of daylight at the bottom, which wind will find. If you run an inflatable tent, confirm the annex was cut for a soft base rather than a rigid shell, because the two hem shapes differ.

Living with one in wind and rain

Fabric walls act like a sail, so an annex changes how your setup behaves in weather. Peg the base skirt on all sides, not just the windward one, and use the guy points if the maker supplied them. Water is the other issue. Rain runs off the tent body and lands exactly where the annex roof meets the wall, so tension that seam and keep the floor lip above the puddle line. If you camp on hardpack that sheds nothing, dig a shallow run-off channel on the uphill side and the floor stays dry all night.

When a rooftop tent annex is the wrong buy

Skip it if you move camp every single day. It adds four to eight minutes each way once you count pegs, and that tax gets old fast on a road trip with a new site every night. Skip it if your parking is tight, because an annex needs clear ground beside the vehicle and a lot of urban or beachfront spots do not offer that. It also adds 6 to 10 kilograms to your kit, which matters on a small hatchback already near its roof rating. Buyers who base camp for three or more nights get the most out of one.

Setup that takes three minutes

Zip the annex on while the tent is still opening, before the ladder goes down. Clip the corners, drop the floor, then peg the skirt working around in one direction so the fabric ends up even. Leave the door open until everything is pegged, otherwise you trap air and the walls bow. At teardown, shake the floor out and dry the base before it goes in the bag. Damp annex fabric packed against a tent base is how mildew starts, and mildew smell never fully leaves.

FAQ: rooftop tent annex

Does an annex fit any rooftop tent? No. It has to match your tent’s attachment system and open footprint, so check the model before ordering.

Can you sleep in an annex? You can put a cot or mat down, but the floor is thin and unheated, so most people use it for gear instead.

Is an annex waterproof? The walls and roof are, but the floor seam is the weak point. Keep the lip above ground water and peg it tight.

How much time does it add? Around four to eight minutes to set up and a similar amount to pack, mostly pegging.

An annex pairs best with a tent that opens fast, so start with our [inflatable rooftop tent range](https://www.playdooutdoor.com/product-category/rooftop-tent/) and ask [our team](https://www.playdooutdoor.com/contact/) which annex hem matches your model.
