Rooftop Tent Mattress & Sleep Comfort Upgrade Guide

Table of Contents

A rooftop tent already lifts you off the cold ground – but the mattress is what decides whether you sleep like a log or like a plank. Most inflatable rooftop tents ship with a 7 cm foam mattress; here’s how to judge it and the upgrades that turn “okay” into “better than my bed at home.”

Start With the Built-In Mattress

PlayDo’s 7 cm high-density foam is a real mattress, not an air pad. For most people it’s comfortable out of the box. Test it one night before buying extras.

Upgrade Option 1: Memory-Foam Topper

A 4-5 cm memory-foam topper over the base mattress adds cloud-like softness and costs little. It rolls up with the tent.

Upgrade Option 2: Thermal Liner as a Sleep Layer

The thermal liner snaps under the mattress and blocks ground or air cold – a warmth win on shoulder-season trips (see our winter guide).

Upgrade Option 3: Pillows & Fit-Out

Don’t skimp on pillows. A small storage net, reading light, and blackout curtain turn the tent into a bedroom.

What to Avoid

Giant air beds fight the tent’s shape and can over-pressure the beams. Stick to thin toppers that follow the built-in mattress.

FAQ

Is the included mattress good enough?

For most campers, yes – 7 cm foam beats any ground pad. Side sleepers may want a topper.

What thickness topper should I add?

4-5 cm memory foam is the sweet spot: soft without eating headroom or fighting the tent shape.

Will a topper fit when packed?

Yes – thin toppers roll with the mattress. Thick air beds do not and can stress the beams.

Does the thermal liner help sleep comfort?

It mainly adds warmth, which reads as comfort on cold nights. It’s not a softness upgrade.

How do I keep the mattress dry?

Vent at night and wipe condensation in the morning (see our condensation guide). Never pack damp.
